March 2017

World Book Day

On World Book Day, the theme was 'Continents of the World'.

Each class teacher chose a continent to explore and she was visited during the day by several other classes.

The girls enjoyed learning new things about the different continents and had their 'passport' stamped by the teacher before moving on to the next classroom.

Easter Competition

The School Council asked the children to design models of sporting activities using kitchen rolls. There were lots of entries; all were of a very high standard and made a wonderful display.

Chicks

The girls in the Early Years Foundation Stage were able to observe the chicks as well. They were very gentle with them.

At this time of year, Prep 3 observe several eggs hatching in an incubator. They use this experience to develop their understanding of many aspects of science.

The photo shows them watching the actions of the chicks in order to complete a survey about their behaviour.

Knitting Workshop

We teamed up with John Lewis, who offered to teach a group of girls how to knit.

Several helpers volunteered to come in and help.

The girls had an interesting, if sometimes puzzling, experience as they got to grips with 'casting on' and doing a few stitches!

Manchester Art Gallery

Prep 3 visited Manchester Art Gallery, where they learned about patterns, using pastels and creating different scenes, using 3D materials.

Judo

One of our pupils whose hobby is Judo was very happy to take part in the demonstration with Carl, her Judo teacher.

Fire Service Visit

The Fire Service visited Prep 7 as part of their Safe4Winter campaign, which promotes safety through the winter and raises awareness of the common dangers faced by children.

Each year the service attends an increasing number of incidents involving children, who often place themselves in danger without realising the potential consequences, and the visit helped to highlight such occasions to our girls.

Not only did they enjoy speaking to the visitors, but they were also able to examine the fire engine.

Shrove Tuesday

Prep 3 made and ate delicious pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. They weighed the ingredients and then mixed them into a batter, before watching Mrs Packman as she cooked them.

They know that Shrove Tuesday was the day when all the food in the house was eaten up before the fast that started on the following day, Ash Wednesday.

Crucial Crew

Prep 7 visited Crucial Crew, an event organised by the Children’s Safety Media Organisation. This is a multi-agency safety event aimed at 10 to 11 year olds and designed to provide children with life skills that will enable them to keep themselves and others safe.

The aim of the Crucial Crew event is to raise the children’s awareness of threats and dangers they may face in an enjoyable and interactive way.

Mary Ward's Birthday

The birthday of our foundress, Mary Ward, is in January. We celebrated the day with Mrs Thompson and Prep 1 who did an assembly to remind us of her life. We then had a party with drinks and chocolate!

Virtual Reality

Google Expeditions invited us to take part in a new Pioneer Programme, to give the children the experience of visiting another country or time in virtual reality.

The staff were trained in the use of iPads to deliver this and they then directed the children to explore outer space or Roman times wearing 3D glasses.

An exciting time was had by all!

Last year, Loreto Prep won an art competition run by Trafford Music Service. The prize was a drumming workshop to be given by one of Trafford’s specialist percussion teachers!

This term, Neil McMinn came to work with Prep 4. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and produced some very interesting sounds.

Healthy Living

As part of their Healthy Living topic, Prep 3 visited Tesco to complete a survey about the fresh produce they saw. They recorded the sugar content in a variety of cereals, then made their own muesli. They enjoyed tasting some of the ingredients!

First Forgiveness

Freshwater Theatre

In January the Freshwater Theatre visited Prep 3 to present an interactive experience about Florence Nightingale.

The girls learned to make bandages and then put them on legs and arms. Some girls were patients and others were nurses. They were amazed at the difference in the way that infection was controlled and the lack of pain relief.

The songs and readings were accompanied by a mime.

The final scene reminded us of the real meaning of Christmas.

The choir presented a service for Advent and Christmas on the last day of term.

Many visitors were able to join us for the final celebration of the year.

Five girls lit the candles on the wreath to remind us that Jesus is almost with us.

Nursery Nativity

Our very first Nursery Nativity took place this year. The Ducklings sang songs and were helped by our Prep 7 girls.

The performance took place in their own room and many parents attended. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The infant department were on their very best behaviour last week when DC Cassidy gave the girls an insight into her work. Suspects had their fingerprints taken and some girls were treated to trying on the uniform.

One of our Prep 5 girls wrote to David Walliams, telling him what she liked about his books and asking him questions about himself.

She received a reply answering her questions. It was signed by David Walliams himself!

Prep 7 did a reflective assembly about Remembrance in the second week of November, which the whole school attended. The class also visited the Cenotaph on the 11th of November with pupils from several other schools.

Prep 4 trip to Tatton Park

Prep 4 enjoyed a visit to Tatton Park on Wednesday 12th October. They explored the Danny the Champion of the World Trail in the woods, played tricks with The Twits in the gardens and visited Matilda in the Mansion. They will now be using all they learned about Roald Dahl and his colourful characters in their Creative Writing work at school, starting with describing what it would be like to discover you had a magical power just like Matilda!

Once again Prep 3 girls stepped back in time looking for work at Dunham Massey house and park. They were given many chores which they carried out diligently. They also assisted the game keeper in catching a poacher. Everyone returned feeling exhausted and greatful for living in current times.

Wood Street Mission

Each December we collect toys for the Wood Street Mission. Here are a few of the beautiful toys that were sent into school.

Barnado’s

In December, we collected for the Barnado’s team at Wythenshawe Sure Start Centre. The collections after the Nativity performances raised £750, and the Christmas coffee morning raised £250 for the same cause. We also collected these groceries and toiletries to be distributed at Christmas.

This young lady sent the Queen a birthday card and has now received a reply from one of her ladies-in-waiting. As well as the letter, she was sent a leaflet about the Queen’s dogs and horses. We were all very interested to read about them!
